Final Fantasy 14 Stormblood Expansion Trailer Highlights Samurai Class

The Stormblood expansion for Square Enix’s MMORPG will introduce a new continent to the game as well as two new character classes. We knew the first was Red Mage and now we know the second: Samurai.
The crimson-clad, katana-wielding warriors will be a damage-based class aimed at unloading on enemies on the front lines of fights and will favor STR gear. Samurai will not have a base class and will start at level 50. Best of all, the character looks to share at least a passing resemblance to Final Fantasy X’s Auron, unquestionably the series’ most bad ass swordsman.

The news was also accompanied by a trailer for the expansion’s opening cinematic (above) which shows off the look and feel of Othard, one of the game’s three main continents where Stormblood will take place, as well as both a Red Mage and Samurai tearing shit up. The new player hub will be the port town of Kugane, with a new residential area called Shirogane. And of course there will be new dungeons in areas called Yanaxia and The Azim Steppe.

The team behind Stormblood is reportedly also working on a version of Bliztball, the aquatic mini-game from FFX, as well. At one point in the opening cinematic there’s a giant floating sphere filling up with water, only further bolstering the expansion’s spiritual connection to Spira.

Square Enix USA provided live commentary on its Twitter account Saturday morning for those who were unable to travel to Germany for the event. The publisher and developer of Final Fantasy 14 noted that Samurai will join the previously announced Red Mage class as another DPS job for the expansion.

Destructoid reports that while the Samurai is the main focus of the trailer, Square Enix also revealed several other new additions that will soon be coming to Final Fantasy 14. Players will be able to explore a new Eastern-themed region called Shirogane and a new player hub in the port town of Kugane. Stormblood will also introduce a new Beast Tribe called the Kojin, a new Primal named Susano and new dungeons including Yanxia and The Azim Steppe. The official box art for the Japanese release of the game, designed by Akihiko Yoshida, was also revealed.

Stormblood was first announced during another fan convention last year in Las Vegas and game director Naoki Yoshida noted at the time that Stormblood‘s arrival would mark more than just one transition for the game. Yoshida said that Square Enix would officially drop PlayStation 3 support for Final Fantasy 14 with the arrival of the new expansion and announced plans are being discussed with Sony to allow PS3 owners to transfer their account and characters to a PS4 version of the game for free. This was mostly welcome news for fans, who have long felt that the PS3 version of the game was holding Final Fantasy 14 back from a design standpoint because it’s a much less powerful system than the PlayStation 4 or a PC.

Square Enix may also be considering bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the Xbox One or even the Nintendo Switch but the company has not mentioned either of those topics since early 2016. The MMO’s most recent major update was Patch 3.5 The Far Edge of Fate which arrived in mid-January. Players are currently working their way through a new main Scenario, new dungeons and collecting one last batch of new gear as they prepare to take the fight into Stormblood this June.

Final Fantasy 14 is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The Stormblood expansion arrives June 20, 2017.
