- Jan 11, 2009

World of Warcraft : The WoW vs. WAR debate makes Top 10 list of video game rage
- Dec 24, 2008
Alec Meer of Rock, Paper, Shotgun in recent times put a new twist on the 'top 10' lists that are cropping up at year's end -- a sort of top ten of gaming rage as expressed on the intertubes. Much of this list is spotlighted on single-gamer titles and the industry itself, but Meer's 'Orc vs Orc' (#8 on the list) caught our attention.

Meer writes, "We've already talked today about the absurd, insane fanboy fallout from our own comparisons between Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft, but in truth it was a torrent of poison that briefly gripped MMORPG sites the world over. Notably, MUDfather Richard Bartle endured toonassassination by a raft of WAR fansites after an conversation in which he apparently stated the two games were very similar." That conversation in question was actually Dr. Bartle's talk with our own (master) Michael Zenke back in June.

World of Warcraft: The World of Warcraft can help teens to speak English
- Oct 29, 2008
At Game Developers Conference last month, Edd Schneider and Kai Zeng presented their poster, English Speaking Players as In-Game Content: New Ideas for Marketing to Youth in Asia.

Their theory — that online gaming can be used to teach English to Asian teens — is based on a project they ran two years ago with American and Chinese students at Suny Potsdam, where Schneider is a professor and Zeng a student of Information Communication Technology.

The results, they say, were outstanding, and now it's time for games like World of Warcraft to break down the server boundaries and let people play together across the globe. Gamasutra spoke with Professor Edd Schneider:

World of Warcraft: What's new in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion?
- Sep 16, 2008
You may have heard that Wrath of the Lich King will add Xbox Live or Steam-esque achievements to World of Warcraft. There are bound to be two kinds of responses to this. Some folks will say, "Oh great, as if World of Warcraft needed to be more mindlessly grind-tastic!" Others, though, will jump at the chance to show just how dedicated they are to their favorite game. The idea's not totally new to MMOs, though; something similar exists in The Lord of the Rings Online's Deed system.

Anyway, our sister site WoW Insider (your source for in-depth WoW news and features -- cha-ching!) has listed its top 10 favorite achievements in the vast new tome of things to go nuts over. Some of them are listed because they're hilarious, like "They Love Me In That Tunnel." Others, because they're historic, like "The Alterac Blitz." You'll need to be pretty WoW literate to get what's so great about most of them, though.
